Council to defend Santin Quarry decision in court and GM gets tick of approval

The continuation of the Lismore City Council meeting was most definitely 'short and sweet' with the meeting opening at 6pm and closing at 6:05pm.

As mentioned in the Lismore App story yesterday, there were 13 items on the agenda to run through from Councillor (Cr) Big Rob with questions to the General Manager who had written explanations in the business paper.

Three councillors did not attend the meeting, Crs Hall, Jensen, Guise and Rob. As Cr Rob was not present when the meeting began the remaining councillors chose to accept Jon Gibbons' responses and not move any as a motion. This was done collectively so the meeting was completed at 6:05pm before going into confidential.

In the two confidential items, Council resolved to defend the Class 4 Appeal following the decision by the Monaltrie Area Community Association Incorporated to take Lismore City Council to the Land and Environment Court following councils decision to allow the Santin Quarry to operate for another 12 years at its October 2023 meeting.

The judicial review will be held this Friday, February 23.

The vote was held during last week's meeting with Crs Bing, Colby, Cook, Gordon, Hall, Jensen, Krieg and Rob voting for and Crs Bird, Ekins and Guise against.

There was some good news for General Manager Jon Gibbons as he got the sign-off for a second year from the councillors present at last night's meeting.

The unanimous vote acknowledged "The General Manager is performing his duties in line with Council's expectations and that of the performance agreement."

During the next evaluation review, Mr Gibbons will present to the council in a confidential session with councillors having the opportunity to present feedback to the committee prior to the completion of the review.

Jon Gibbons has survived one year as General Manager of Lismore City Council and now has the support of councillors to enter year two. Given the recent history with Shelley Oldham, Michael Donnely, John Walker and now Jon Gibbons holding the general manager's position, this is no mean feat.

Mayor Steve Krieg told the Lismore App, with tongue in cheek, "We're very proud of this achievement, getting a Lismore general manager past the 52-week mark."

The next Lismore City Council meeting is on Tuesday, March 12 at 6pm.
