Council meets tomorrow to decide on 11 or 9 councillors

Tomorrow will mark the second Tuesday of the month when Lismore City Council (LCC) holds its monthly council meeting in the Goonellabah chambers.

Predictably, a rescission motion has been moved by Councillors (Cr) Cook, Rob and Guise on reducing the number of councillors from 11 to 9 including the popularly elected Mayor.

During the March LCC meeting, Crs Gordon and Bing moved the reduction in numbers which ended in a tied 5/5 vote when Mayor Krieg used his deciding vote to pass the motion. Cr Darlene Cook was absent at the March meeting.

Unless Cr Peter Colby changes his vote, it appears the rescission motion will be successful 6/5 and the number of LCC councillors will remain at 11.

This decision may well be out of self-interest as councillors look to protect their jobs rather than listen to the community whom they confess to represent.

The Lismore App has been running a poll on how many councillors its readers would like to see, 11 or 9. The results clearly indicate a preference for 9 councillors with 86.6% of the vote while 13.4% would like the number to remain at 11. This is from a sample of 209 people. You still have time to vote by clicking this link https://poll.app.do/lismore-city-councillors-11-or-9. There is one vote per person.

The Lismore App also received comments like, "7 is appropriate as the council has very limited planning powers now. And yes it's also about the money. Removing two councillors will save ratepayers $200000 over the four year life of the council and that cash could go to needy community groups", and "I'm in the 9 camp myself. 11 is too much scope for derision and infighting. I think the old K.I.S.S. rule works best", and, "make it 5, majority especially the new ones not having disadvantaged people (flood affected mainly) into their hearts, we ain’t need opportunists but real representatives. best to have Administration in right after state election, painful but necessary for a cleaning up."

If councillors did not believe in the integrity of the Lismore App poll, perhaps Lismore City Council should run a poll on their Your Say website page and through their Facebook page and let the people of Lismore have the final say.

Other council matters to be discussed and voted on tomorrow night include:

  • The East and South Lismore Sewage Treatment Plant Upgrades: a recommendation has been made to council for fixing and upgrading these assets to be more flood resilient.
  • A planning proposal to adopt LEP optional clause 5.22 - special flood considerations so council can apply development controls to sensitive and hazardous development between the flood planning area and probable maximum flood
  • The discontinuation of Social Justice and Crime Prevention Committee: they last met in August 2019.

The Lismore City Council meeting will commence at 6pm tomorrow night (Tuesday April 11). You can attend the meeting in person or watch it via council's Facebook Page.
