With the expected high rainfall and likely moderate and possible major flooding today, Lismore City Council (LCC) wants to reassure the community about the status of the levee and pumps.
As the river height has now reached 6.04m and rising, the last remaining levee gate at Browns Creek has now been shut as per normal procedure. This means that all flood levee gates are now closed.
The February flood event caused damage to the Browns Creek pump station which then had interim repairs completed and is now operational. The two pumps at Browns Creek started to work as per normal procedure when the river reached 5.2m this morning.
Council has hired two large pumps and these have been deployed to the Gas Works Creek pump station which are now operational and working as intended.
Unfortunately, Council has been unable to install any replacement pumps at the Hollingsworth Creek pump station due to limited access and the risk of becoming isolated as the river rises.
This means that roads in the South Lismore area may be cut earlier than normal and residents should factor this into their planning.
LCC will have more information comes to hand.
Council staff are on standby as always to respond and assist our community.
Stay safe everyone and never drive or walk-through floodwaters.
