Big hitting Jack Cooper starred for Goonellabah Workers Sports on Saturday. File PhotoGoonellabah Workers Sports Jack Cooper and Reece Gregor starred for their side in a dramatic tied match in LJ Hooker League action.
Goonellabah travelled to Reg Dalton Field to take on the Cudgen Hornets in Round 16 action.
The home side won the toss and elected to bowl first and Jack Cooper relished the decision, hitting the first three balls of the innings for 4, with 15 off the first over.
Opener Nathan Bezrouchko (2) fell in just the fourth over, but after a quick start, the side was 1/35.
Cooper continued on with his big hitting, with Kevin Warid (0) and brother Ben Cooper (2) falling cheaply to be 3/59 in the 8th over.
Blake Perkins (29) and Damien Santin (56 not out) added vital runs but it was Jack Cooper who stole the show.
He lost his wicket in just the 18th over but had completed a devastating innings of 139 off just 62 balls, which included 18 fours and 9 sixes.
The highlight was the 13th over, which included 4 fours and a six for a total of 22.
With Santin completing his half-century, the visitors finished at 7/267 off their allotted 40 overs.
Reece Gregor struck early, picking up opener Callum Pritchard before danger players Callum Gall (56) and Alec Williams (104) combined for a 123-run partnership, putting pressure on the GWS bowlers.
Bezrouchko (2/35) broke the partnership, but the Cudgen middle order was still scoring well and was in striking distance of the big total.
Gregor's second spell, where he picked up four more wickets to finish with 5/76 and Jack Cooper (3/46) bowling at the end, proved to be the difference.
Needing six runs off the last over for victory, the match came down to the second last ball of the match, with Cooper taking the wicket of Jamie Wilson to have Cudgen all out for 267, resulting in a tie.
The drawn match has seen Goonellabah drop to second on the LJ Hooker League ladder after Tintenbar East Ballina defeated Terranora Lakes by 6 wickets.
It doesn't get any easier for the GWS side with a key match-up next week against Tweed Banora Colts in the second last round before the finals.
