A storm has erupted in South Lismore as loyal customers of Skimmo's Takeaway voice their anger at the likely shutdown of the much loved takeaway shop.
Skimmo's sits on 135 Union Street which has recently been sold along with 137 and 139 Union Street.
(The size of the proposed DA covers 135, 137 and 139 Union Street so includes Perkins parking, a rental and Skimmos on the corner)
A Development Application (DA) has been submitted to Lismore City Council by the Spectrum Retail Group for a service station to built on the three blocks of land.
This means the writing is on the wall for Skimmo's but they are not going down without creating a raucous.
The owners have started a petition that can be signed in store and will be handed to council by March 17.
Social media has been inundated with comments like "Best bacon n egg sandwich around" and "great food, awesome service."
While others are questioning another service station in an already well serviced part of town.
"There’s also one across the road and a Liberty just over the rail lines. We need this like we need another Indian restaurant," and "There’s too much traffic on that corner for more entry and exit of cars from a service station."
A petition, while unlikely to save the corner store, shows the love and passion that people have for Skimmo's food like burgers and sandwiches. It may mean a new location in South Lismore as the DA moves through its stages.
The DA covers three blocks so covers a large parcel of land.
The proposed site will have three pumps with six re-fuelling parking bays plus 9 car park spaces including a disabled and air/water space.
The DA also states and 'ancillary shop' will be built.
The interesting aspect is how big will the ancillary shop be with only six (6) refuelling bays on a large parcel of land. The question to ponder is "will this be Lismore's largest petrol/grocery service station?" Almost like a one-stop shop on your way home from work, no more stopping at Coles or Woolworths.
The proposed traffic movement is one way turning left into the service station with another left turn exit, thus separating cars entering and leaving the site. There will be access via Elliot Road to the north.
Another interesting component of this DA is to see how our Lismore City Council Councillors react.
The Two Mates Boutique Brewery was called up with seven complaints while Skimmo's has well and truly surpassed that mark already.
Watch this space as the debate continues.
