In recent weeks East Lismore Bowling Club has held finals for the 2021 Club triples championship and the 2022 Club fours championship.
The 2021 triples competition originally began in mid-October 2021 but was affected by player availability over the Christmas break and then by the February/March floods which adversely affected so many in our region.
The eventual winners were Andrew Maslen, Lachlan Maslen and Neal (Tiny) Harding who defeated Gary Finnigan, Bill Griffin and Steve Fields
22 - 16 in a tightly fought final.
Harding’s team started confidently and enjoyed a 5 shot lead after the first 4 ends. However Fields and his bowlers found their feet and began to bowl themselves back into the match, with the score sitting at 6-4 after 9 ends.
A disastrous end, with some great bowling by Fields to change a 3 shot losing margin to a 4 shot winning one, with the final bowl of the end, in the 11th end, saw team Fields take the lead for the first time in the match 8-7.
Harding and his team bounced back from this setback however, scoring 7 shots in the next 3 ends to sit at a comfortable 6 shot lead and then ground out the remaining ends to win 22-16. As skip, Harding bowled brilliantly and was well supported by Lachlan Maslen who delivered some important bowls when under pressure.
A week earlier the 2022 Club Fours Championship was decided. Brain Lee, Tony Heffernan, Jake Heffernan and Warren Morrissey defeated Andrew Maslen, Rod Parkes, Nathan Scandrett and Tony Cheli 20-16.
The first 5 ends were extremely tight, with Lee and T Heffernan immediately exerting pressure that Scandrett and Cheli did well to counter. The score was close with Morrissey’s team leading 4-3.
The next 6 ends saw fantastic team bowling from Morrisey’s team, creating a great deal of pressure by building the head well and moving their opponents' bowls when necessary, for them to extend their lead to 10-5.
Great bowling by Cheli saw his team take 4 shots on the 12th and 15th ends to come back to within 1 shot of Morrissey (14-13).
However, Morrissey remained in control over the remaining 6 ends and won a tight contest 20-16.
B Lee was brilliant throughout the match, immediately drawing multiple shots that put the opposition on the back foot, however all four of Morrissey’s team bowled extremely well throughout the final.
