Photo: DC Sports PhotographyFemale cricket in Lismore and the Northern Rivers was arguably at its peak in the 1970s and '80s, when cricketers, like former Australian captain Lyn Larsen, were on the field every summer weekend.
The female game has dwindled since that golden age, but since 2025, it has been sprouting new shoots and growing. So much so that it needs dedicated scheduling fixtures for women and girls.
Northern Rivers Junior Cricket created a milestone moment this year with the first-ever all-female junior game in under-14s in October 2025, when the Casino Cricket Club took on Marist Brothers Pitch Perfect.
Casino Cricket Club has experienced a boom in female cricket participation this season, with 30% of all player registrations being women or girls, compared to 12% the previous season.
Riding this new wave of female cricket participation, the Casino Cricket Club is excited to announce the Northern Rivers Women’s Smash, a welcoming two‑day T20 cricket competition designed to grow and celebrate women’s cricket in the Northern Rivers.
This is the first tournament of its kind in the Northern Rivers, promoting an all-female cricket experience.
The event will run on Sunday, 1 and Sunday, 8 February 2026 between 9:00am and 4:30pm at Queen Elizabeth Park, Casino, with two games per team each day, a BBQ lunch, and a Grand Final to cap off the program. New players are strongly encouraged to register, as are female participants aged 13 plus.
