Standing in the CBD on Thursday, two trucks drove down Woodlark Street with three flood-damaged cars on the back. This is just one of multiple scenes that have happened since the floodwaters receded.
Peer-to-peer car-sharing platform Car Next Door is offering transport assistance for flood-affected locals and monetary credits to car owners willing to share their cars with those in need.
As well as sending 20 fleet cars to Northern NSW and Queensland to support locals without a means of transport, Car Next Door, which was recently acquired by Uber, is providing more than $20,000-worth of driving credits to NSW and QLD locals who have been affected by flooding.
Bonus income for locals sharing their cars
Locals in flood-affected areas who are in a position to share their cars will receive a $250 bonus after the first booking is completed.
Car Next Door hopes that the initiative (up to $50,000 total) will encourage more people whose cars were not damaged to share their cars to help their neighbours. There are many people who need transport to get around while their own cars are damaged, and others like Lachlan Gatti, who hired a van to go and help locals and clean up the devastation.
“So many local people have lost their cars and everything else in the floods and are now struggling to get around,” said Car Next Door’s Fiona Wells.
“If you have a car that you’re not using every day, please consider sharing it with others in need,” said Ms Wells.
“Sharing through the Car Next Door platform is safe - and simple as well. All borrowers are screened and things like fuel, fines or tolls and damage cover are taken care of.”

Hire of Hyundai cars in Lismore
With few or no local rental cars available, the local community urgently needs more short-term car hire services.
To help fill the gap, Car Next Door and Hyundai have delivered 10 cars and vans from Sydney to Lismore. An additional 10 cars are headed to other areas around the Northern Rivers to increase supply in these impacted areas. They can be booked through the Car Next Door app or website, at low rates to further help flood-affected communities.
