Bureau are tipping a drier than normal autumn

The Bureau of Meteorology is tipping a drier-than-normal autumn period (March to May) for Lismore.

That will come as good news for the rebuild with much of the work requiring dry conditions to move ahead unhindered. This is definitely the case for road and pothole work.

You may remember the Lismore App story in August 2022 when The Bureau first alerted of us a third La Nina event when it moved to an 'Alert' warning. The wettest parts of NSW since that time have been west and south of the Northern Rivers allowing for our water table to drop and the rebuild to begin in earnest.

(Soil moisture map from the Bureau of Meteorology showing the Northern Rivers is mostly below average)

That's not to say we won't get another weather event but the chances are a lot less than they were at the end of 2022.

The chance for an unusually wet autumn is only 12% while the chance of above-median rainfall is 36% and the chance of an unusually dry autumn is 25%.

In terms of our summer rainfall, the total for the three months was 236mm well below the mean which is 428.7mm.

March is Lismore's wettest month with a mean of 182.6mm and a mean of 359.3mm for autumn (March to May). So far we have seen 85mm in the first 8 days of March.

As is typically the case, La Nina brings cooler average temperatures so when it dissipates the warmer temperatures return.

There is an 84% chance of above-mean temperatures of 24.8 degrees for autumn and a 26% chance of it being unusually warm at over 25.3 degrees.

Looking ahead, we will see some more rainfall from Friday with another wide range due to the isolated nature of the falls. Friday is forecasting 1-15mm, Saturday 2 - 20mm and Sunday also 2 - 20mm.
