Brothers Under 16s win thriller for junior trebleThe victorious Marist Brothers Under 16 side with coaches Luke Hamshaw and Brad Cleaver last night after beating their counterparts at Clunes in a thriller.

Marist Brothers Under 16s won a thriller against their counterparts from Clunes to complete a trebe in this year's Northern Rivers Junior Cricket competitions.

In a Twenty20 match that showcased the finest Under 16 cricketers in the Lismore region, Brothers' captain Jack Taylor won the toss and elected to bat first at Heaps Oval last night.

Joe Davis and Hamish Weekes, who starred in the Under 14 final, put on 52 runs for the opening wicket, before Clunes fought back to leave Brothers 7/69 with Clunes off-spin bowler Zac Sullivan excelling with three wickets for just 12 runs in four overs. Will Myers also took two wickets in two overs for 12 runs.

With Brothers trying to score quick runs, Noah Enright hit two boundaries to be 14 not out as Brothers reached 9/100 in 20 overs. Only Davis (2), Weekes (3) and Enright (2) scored boundaries in difficult conditions. Kaleb Armstrong also took two wickets off four øvers, which cost 23 runs.

In reply, Clunes collapsed from 0/21 to 4/29 before Reece Gallagher and Zac Sullivan appeared to be getting on top of the bowling and heading for victory. Gallagher particularly, hit three boundaries.

Then Brothers brought on Lachlan O'Sullivan, also in Brothers' victorious Under 14s, who bowled Gallagher (25), Sullivan (20) and had Henry Williams (0) caught by Joe Davis.

"Lachlan was the player of the match," said Marist Brothers Cricket Club President Glen Lees. "He took three wickets for 10 runs at the death."

Will Myers, who hit one of the six boundaries in the innings, was left unbeaten on 15 not out as Clunes Junior Cricket's Under 16s fell six runs short in a very tight final.
