Brothers scrape through for Round 1 win

Marist Brothers have scraped through for a narrow win in Round 1 of the LJ Hooker League season.

Brothers hosted Lennox Head at Mortimer Oval on Saturday and it was evident there were a few cobwebs to clear after a long off-season.

Lennox Head won the toss and elected to bat first, getting off to a solid start.

Captain Brendan Mitchell and the tall Harrison Gillett opened the bowling for Brothers.

Mitchell, first change bowler Tom Molloy and English import Thomas Lindsay all had early wickets before the Pirates middle order settled in and began to compile a decent total.

Andrew Munroe managed to take the prized scalp of Nick Asser for 51 and the wickets then began to fall, Lennox Head eventually all out for 181 in the 39th over.

Newcomer Sean Walters finished with 3/12 off 3 overs, Molloy 2/32 off 6.2 overs and Lindsay 2/21 off his 7 overs.

The run chase did not get off to a great start, with young guns Joe Parsons and Cooper Williams both falling for 0.

Andrew Munroe (22) and Pat Martin (28) steadied the ship before another mini collapse with Lindsay and Luke Collings adding to the duck tally to see Brothers 6-85 and in a bit of trouble.

Luke Hamshaw managed to grind out a match defining 52, before Walters (25 not out) and Brad Cleaver (11 not out) passed the total in the 36th over, 7 wickets down.

Remarkably the second-highest scorer for Marist Brothers was Extras, with 45, which included 42 wides.

Brothers will work hard in the nets this week, with a Round 2 Grand Final replay against Cudgen next Saturday in Cudgen, which promises to be an interesting clash.
