Marist Brothers First Grade opening batsmen Matt Cleaver and Luke Collings have scored the highest opening partnership at the club in at least 10 years and possibly 20 years.
Brothers, unbeaten in Northern Rivers Cricket League's premier competition, travelled to Casino to take on Casino RSM Cavaliers. Cavaliers' captain Corey Latta won the toss and elected to bat on a baking hot day on Saturday.
Brothers' bowlers have been on fire all season and once again did not let captain Luke Hamshaw down.
"Yeah, it was another great effort from all the bowlers on a very hot day in Casino. Dan (Hamshaw) bowled well and was into his seventh straight over of leg spin, which was very much needed to give the quicks a break from the heat. Special mention also to Jeremy Perkins, who came into his first game of First Grade for the year, and managed six high quality overs in gruelling conditions," said Luke Hamshaw, who used six bowlers to share the load in the conditions.
Dan Hamshaw took 3/30 after the Cavaliers' top order had been unable to cope with Owen Bensley 2/23, Andrew Munroe 2/33, Jeremy Perkins 1/12 and James Fennamore 1/18.
Cavaliers were bowled out for 145 in the 29th over.
Cleaver and Collings are very different batsmen. Collings is a left-handed batsman, who favours the legside, and likes to strike the ball to and over the boundary, whereas right-handed Cleaver is more of a grafter, who works the ball to the offside.
They hit an exhilarating 147 unbeaten runs, with both 68 not out, in 22.4 overs, which is at more than six-and-a-half runs an over.
"That would be close to my best," said Cleaver. "I have had a few 100 partnerships but that would probably be one of my favourites to be involved in."
It is the highest partnership for both players and to finish unbeaten was an outstanding effort.
It is the highest opening wicket partnership for Marist Brothers in First Grade since MyCricket was launched 10 years ago. Craig Hamshaw, Lismore Cricket District Association President, said he was part of a Marist Brothers' opening partnership of 200 about 20 years ago and believed that to be the record.
Luke Hamshaw said "it was a pleasure to sit back and watch the stroke play of Luke and Matt in a great partnership."
Brothers are now the only unbeaten club in Northern Rivers Cricket League's First Grade competition after Norths' capitulation to Goonellabah Workers Sports' debutant Charlie Alexander at Heaps Oval on Saturday.
First Grade debutant, 16, takes five wickets to turn a loss into a win
"It’s great to be still undefeated but we aren’t getting too far ahead of ourselves and know there’s still areas of our game we need to improve on," said Luke Hamshaw.
"I’m very happy to see the top order batsman really fire these last couple of weeks to support the work our bowlers have been doing all year."
