BREAKING NEWS! COVID case in Goonellabah Public School

Lynne Weir Acting Chief Executive Northern NSW Local Health District has confirmed a case of COVID-19 this afternoon in the Lismore area.

Investigations into the source of the case are continuing. Known contacts of the case are being contacted to get tested immediately and self-isolate.

The person attended a school in Goonellabah on Monday, 13 September.

NNSWLHD is working with the NSW Department of Education to advise parents and pupils, and the school will be closed from tomorrow, Thursday, 16 September.

Anyone with even the mildest of symptoms of COVID-19 is urged to get tested and self-isolate until a negative test result is received.

A full list of testing clinics can be found at: https://www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/health- and-wellbeing/clinics

The Goonellabah Public School website has stated "that a member of the Goonellabah Public School has tested positive for COVID-19."

Principal Mark Spencer said, "Our school will be non-operational effective immediately for the on-site attendance of students and staff to allow time for contact tracing and cleaning."

Parents and carers were asked to collect their children while the supervision of children will be in place until they are collected."

The Out of School Hours Goonellabah will be made non-operational as well.

Mr Spencer has asked all staff and students to self-isolate until they receive further advice.

NSW Health has requested anyone who has been unwell or if you develop any symptoms such as a fever, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, runny nose, loss of smell/taste, muscle/joint pains, diarrhoea, nausea/vomiting or extreme tiredness to be tested at one of the COVID-19 testing clinics.

Further information about COVID-19 is available on the NSW Government website.

The NSW Department of Education will continue to work closely with NSW Health to ensure the health and safety of all students and staff is maintained.

"The safety and wellbeing of our staff and students is of paramount importance to us at all times. As such we will continue to work closely with NSW Health to ensure that all necessary health advice is adhered to," Mr Spencer said.

"While we recognise this will be disruptive and inconvenient for families, it is important that we follow NSW Health advice and take all necessary precautions to minimise the risk of further transmission to support our community."

There has been no word from the State Government if Lismore and the Northern Rivers will be in lockdown. More to come.
