Another long-standing Lismore business has had to move locations due to circumstances beyond their control.
On Tuesday, the Lismore App reported that Pegasus Screenprints and Darkstyle Window Tinting were leaving South Lismore after 30 years and now appliance repairers Bostock's has made the move from East Lismore to Goonellabah after 28 years.
Many locals would have seen the Bostock's sign on Cynthia Wilson Drive just up from SCU and noticed the signage is no longer there.
"The landlord, who was flood-affected, decided he was going to use the space for himself and we had to move out," was the simple explanation from Rick Bostock.
That caused a little bit of tension and worry for owners Rick and Lee-anne as they needed to search for suitable premises for the first time since March 1996, the month Rick moved in after starting Bostock's from his home on Wyrallah Road in 1995.
"We certainly weren't going to go to a flood area so it took a few months to find the right place," Lee-anne said.
Rick added, "It was five months from when we got notified to when we got the tip-off from the guys over here at Hans that this fella was going to move out (Gonzo's Panel Beating).
That tip-off came at Lee-anne's father's funeral when a friend of her father introduced herself and told Lee-anne and Rick that she knew somewhere for them to move. After the old landlord gave them a three-month extension the deal was done, a new lease signed and the plans to move were put in place.
The Bostock's Easter weekend was spent finishing the move so they can officially open the new premises today at 239 Oliver Avenue, Goonellabah, just before the new Oliver Avenue extension.
Is moving a business after 28 years like moving a house where you end up with so much accumulated junk?
Lee-anne laughs and says, "Oh...my....god."
"Yes, there was stuff there that I've gone really, that's where that was," Rick added. "Don't need that so it went straight to the bin."
"When Rick started Tech, because that's what it was back then in 1979 when he started his electrical apprenticeship, we found that. We found references from when he was still at school and doing some work to help him gain employment and apprenticeship," Lee-anne said. "21st birthday cards, that was 1983," she laughed.
"There have been some laughs and some tears with the packing and the cleaning out. There's been some 'oh my god's but it has been therapeutic."
Is the move from East Lismore, near the CBD, to Goonellabah going to change the Bostock's business?
"I have found this last twelve months, well since the floods two years ago, that I don't get a lot of work now from over south and north with the devastation. A lot of it is now Goonellabah based so we'll be closer to the action up here. As good a position as we were in, I think we're in a better spot now."
"We've had our signs up for just over two weeks, and the amount of comments to us that they've already seen our signs is really pleasing."
You will find Rick and Lee-anne at Bostock's Appliance Repair at 239 Oliver Avenue, opposite Hans Electrical.
They are open Monday to Friday 8:30am to 4:30pm with Friday's closing a little earlier "if we can" to repair washing machines, stoves and ovens, dryers and dishwashers of the major brands. Bostock's does not repair gas appliances so no fridges.
