Big wins for the Lismore Storm

The Lismore Storm had two big wins in their Sunshine Conference basketball match-ups on Saturday afternoon.

The Storm Division 1 Men's side came up against the Coffs Harbour Suns and the Women clashed with the Ballina Breakers.

The Men kicked off proceedings and blew the Suns off the court in the first quarter, leading 33-12 at the break and blowing that out to a 39-point lead at halftime, 63-24.

The young Coffs Harbour side were no match for the fast pace of the Storm.

After a last round loss to the Valley Braves, the Lismore side stepped up their defensive effort, which produced easy transition baskets in offence, with everyone contributing at both ends.

Storm youngster Kane Daley produced his best game of the season, with 24 points, Toby Barlow led the game with 30, Zac Knight and Jade Chandler both had 18, and Jacob Harkin finished with 11.

Lismore eventually took the match 116-59.

The Men will play the Valley Braves next Saturday, before meeting the same side again in the Major Semi-Final a week later.

The Women were out to avenge two narrow losses to the Ballina Breakers when they tipped off in the last match of the day at 6:00pm.

The Storm started well, with an early lead before Ballina settled into their rhythm.

The Storm managed to hold a narrow lead at the quarter-time break 20-17, and held it through to halftime, 33-29.

With just seven players suiting up for the match, the Lismore team needed everyone to contribute, and that's what they were able to do at both ends of the court, slowly stretching the lead to 6 at the final break.

The Storm eventually took the match 61-50, with Alissa McWhirter top scoring with 20 points, Kiara Richardson had 12, and Makayla Greensill finished with 10.

The Women close off the regular season next weekend against the Byron Beez in Byron before contesting the Finals the following week.

The Division 2 Men went down to the Tweed Valley Volcanoes 80-69, with Declan Young top scoring with 25 and Brodey Rossington with 13.

The final round of the competition will be played next weekend, with the Finals just around the corner.

The Storm Division 1 Men's and Women's teams have locked in semi-final berths and will use next Saturday's games to ready themselves for a tilt at the title.
