Big Scrub Landcare, in association with Rous County Council, has announced the return of Big Scrub Rainforest Day at Rocky Creek Dam on Sunday, 30th October 2022.
This year’s theme is ‘Reconnecting community, healing ecosystems’ and includes a series of rainforest-related presentations, workshops, walks, interactive displays, nature-based children’s activities and a community planting of 1,000 rainforest trees.
Dr Tony Parkes (President of Big Scrub Landcare) said:
“Following all of the major challenges we have faced over recent years, including floods, fire and the Covid pandemic, we are delighted to be able to offer this well-loved event to reconnect our community with each other and with the beauty of the Big Scrub rainforest.
"We have opted for a laid-back style event this year at Rocky Creek Dam and are encouraging people to bring a picnic lunch as well as their camp chairs or a blanket."
"We have a fantastic program lineup with something for everyone including a range of well-respected rainforest ecologists, regenerators, scientists and conservation groups leading our walks, workshops and presentations throughout the day."
"This year’s event offers a fantastic opportunity to learn more about how we can work together to help heal our local ecosystems, particularly the Big Scrub rainforest of which only 1% of its original expanse remains”.

About Big Scrub Landcare
Our mission is to restore and care for critically endangered lowland subtropical rainforest, focusing on the Big Scrub rainforest of northern New South Wales, Australia. Covering an area of approximately 75,000 hectares between Byron Bay, Ballina and Lismore, the Big Scrub was the largest expanse of lowland subtropical rainforest in Australia, until it was extensively cleared to approximately 1% of its original size.
Founded in 1993, we are one of the largest Landcare groups in the country with almost 600 members and many supporters. Our focus is promoting, facilitating and undertaking long-term restoration and ongoing care of critically endangered lowland subtropical rainforest. Our flagship program is ‘Science Saving Rainforests’, an internationally innovative approach to applying the latest genome science to the ecological recovery of heavily degraded ecosystems and the recovery of their threatened species.
Now in its 24th year, the annual Big Scrub Rainforest Day presents a diverse range of activities and information on ecosystem rehabilitation and restoration and attracts visitors to the Northern Rivers from around Australia.
