Monday confirmed the result we already knew, Steve Krieg won the Mayoral Lismore Local Council Election in a landslide.

Today, the NSW Electoral Commission confirmed that colourful and controversial character Big Rob will take his seat at council meetings for the first time with The Greens Adam Guise. Both were voted in at the 42nd count this morning as preferences were distributed. was voted in as the 10th and final person to join Lismore City Council, as was the case in 2016 for his second term as a councillor.

Steve Krieg became Lismore's most popular Mayor in the digital era by winning 54.51% of the first preference vote and a massive 69.82% of the vote after preferences were distributed with his closest rival Vanessa Ekins on 30.18%. In 2012 Labor's Jenny Dowell won with 53.2% of the first preference vote.

Steve Krieg told the Lismore App, "I am very relieved and excited and looking forward to the challenges ahead. We are looking forward to creating opportunities that will bring Lismore back to life."

The predictable part of the December 4 election was the Mayoral vote with Independent Patrick Healey dropping out first followed by Independent Big Rob, Labor's Darlene Cook and Our Sustainable Future's Elly Bird.

The makeup of Lismore City Council councillors for the next 2 years and 9 months is:

  • Steve Krieg - Mayor (Owner La Baracca and Ristretto)
  • Peter Colby (Steve Krieg ticket) Former Director and CEO of major companies including Sony Foundation.
  • Jeri Hall (Steve Krieg ticket) Small business owner and operator of Halls Bus Company.
  • Andrew Gordon (Steve Krieg ticket) Real Estate Agent and owner R Gordon and Son.
  • Electra Jansen (Steve Krieg ticket) A decade of experience in international beverage company Coca-Cola.
  • Andrew Bing (Steve Krieg ticket) Former dealer and principal of Trevan Ford.
  • Vanessa Ekins (The Greens) Former Mayor and a 17-year councillor on Lismore and 13 years on Rous County Council.
  • Darlene Cook (Labor Party) LCC Councillor for the past 5 years.
  • Elly Bird (Our Sustainable Future Party) LCC Councillor for the last 5 years.
  • Big Rob (Independent) Former small business owner.
  • Adam Guise (The Greens) LCC Councillor for the last 5 years.

Big Rob told the Lismore App, "Fake news, no comment" when asked about his reaction to becoming a Lismore City councillor.

The Lismore App Facebook page has polarising opinions about Big Rob becoming a councillor with some saying "Just when you think LCC couldn't get any worse" and "That is terrible news. His behaviour is appalling," to "Stop being so negative, give Big Rob a go, he will keep them honest and fighting for Lismore!!" and "For years he has been keeping them honest, now he is them."

Adam Guise is another who does not like speaking to the media. Greens leader for Lismore Vanessa Ekins said Adam is a very focussed and hard-working councillor who loves the committee work and enjoys thoroughly researching all aspects of the job.

The new Lismore City Council will meet for the first time on Tuesday, February 8, 2022 to deal with council matters like Development Applications but have a great deal of work to do before that date.

There is a meet and greet tomorrow so all 11 people can get to know each other.

The first workshop is Wednesday, January 5 with the first formal meeting of council on Tuesday, January 11 where all councillors take the pledge and appoint the Deputy Mayor as well as committee representatives.

In between there will be more workshops as new councillors get a crash course in code of conduct procedures, training in planning processes and every aspect of being a councillor before the first meeting on February 8 where business papers are introduced, discussed and voting begins.

This is where council meetings will be interesting. Steve Krieg has the majority vote at 6 to 5 if all of his ticket agree and vote together. We have seen changes within council in a four-year term such as former councillor Eddie Lloyd who was voted in on the Labor ticket but ended her term voting with The Greens on the majority of items.

One aspect is certain, there will be intense debate with the likes of Big Rob and Adam Guise in the chamber and controversial issues like the Dunoon Dam being put on the table not only in Lismore but for Rous County Council as there is likely to be a change in the councillors there too.

2022 will have different faces with different perspectives on how to grow Lismore for the future but the constant is Lismore City Council's ongoing dire financial situation, this will not likely change in one two year and nine-month term.
