The donation of a 24-acre property worth $440,000 to enable the expansion of the Sugarshine Farm Sanctuary is a “dream come true”, says founder Kelly Nelder.
Sugarshine was established in 2015 on a 3.5 hectare property at Wyrallah to provide a haven for unwanted animals and those that would otherwise be slaughtered such as cows, goats, sheep, pigs, chickens, roosters, ducks, turkeys, cats and dogs.
“The requests to take in rescued farm animals are constant and we've been at full capacity for a couple of years now, with no end in sight,” Ms Nelder said.

About six months ago she received a call from a child psychologist who had heard Sugarshine was a good rescue organisation but did not have not enough land.
“She wanted to buy land for a sanctuary but didn't have time to run it herself so she offered to buy us some land so of course I said yes,” she said.
“So we went and looked at lots of properties and we found the perfect one five minutes from Sugarshine.
“It's got lots of grass, it's got a flowing creek and it's really beautiful and we moved there a couple of weeks ago.”

Ms Nelder said a small number of goats, sheep and ducks had already been relocated to the new property.
“The two properties will both have animals but there's a lot of work to be done on the new property with fencing and water supply and things like that so we're taking it very slowly,” she said.
Ms Nelder said the new property was ideal.
“This is a dream come true for Sugarshine because I run the sanctuary and can only work part time as a nurse so my chances for buying another property were pretty slim,” she said.
“So this has really changed our lives and the lives of the animals here.”
Ms Nelder said Sugarshine was looking for volunteers and donations to work on the new site. For more information check the Sugarshine Sanctuary Facebook page.
