Aussie Families Flock to New Zealand for this Dream Road TripThe picturesque Milford Sound on New Zealands South Island

There’s something magical about packing up the car, hitting the open road, and exploring somewhere new with your family. For Aussie families, New Zealand has long since been the go-to destination for the ultimate family road trip.

Located just across the Tasman, New Zealand is known for its stunning landscapes, rich Māori history, and incredible natural beauty. It is also home to some mind-blowing adventure activities, excellent food and wine, and people who welcome visitors with open arms.

Given this, it’s no surprise that many Australians choose to explore New Zealand on four wheels. If you fancy doing likewise, this guide is here to help.

Why New Zealand is perfect for families

As a country, New Zealand is tailor-made for family road trips. To start with, distances between towns are short, so you’re never stuck in the car for too long. At the same time, the roads are well-kept and safe, which makes them easy for Aussies to navigate.

There’s also plenty to see and do across both the North and South islands. From glow worm caves to adventure parks, historic towns to sandy beaches, there’s always something to pique your interest. In addition, petrol isn’t too expensive and there are several accommodation options to suit all budgets.

Road Trip Routes

If you would like to embark on a road trip around New Zealand, there are several routes you can take. Here are five that you should find rewarding.

1. Queenstown to Milford Sound Drive

One of the most popular routes for Aussie travellers is the Queenstown to Milford Sound drive

This journey takes you through some of the most scenic drives on the South Island of New Zealand. On it, you’ll see snow-capped mountains, lush valleys, and crystal-clear lakes that glisten in the sun.

There are numerous stops along the way to stretch their legs, take photos, and let the kids run around. Once at Milford Sound, the best way to explore the area is on a boat. The drive takes about four hours each way, so it’s best to plan an overnight stop in Te Anau.

2. Auckland to Rotorua

This classic North Island route is perfect for families with younger kids. You’ll start in Auckland and head south towards Rotorua, with a stop at Hamilton Gardens along the way.

At Rotorua, you can enjoy a wonderland of bubbling mud pools, steaming geysers, and cultural experiences. Families can also enjoy the Skyline Gondola and Luge rides, while Lake Rotorua is a top spot for a picnic.

The drive is short, only about three hours one way. So, you could even do it as a day trip if you wanted to.

3. Christchurch to Queenstown

You can see the best of the South Island if you make your way from Christchurch to Queenstown.

The drive between the two will take you through Lake Tekapo and Lake Pukaki, two of the most stunning spots in the country. You’ll want to spend some time at both, kayaking, swimming if it is a warm day, or generally relaxing.

After visiting the lakes, continue through the magnificent Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park before rolling into Queenstown. Known as the adventure capital of the world, it offers everything from gondola rides and lakeside strolls to jet boating and bungy jumping.

4. Wellington to Napier

With its compelling mix of culture and coastal views, the Wellington to Napier route is one you should really enjoy.

Starting in the capital, you’ll head north through the Wairarapa, which is full of charming towns and idyllic wineries. As the road hugs the coast in places, you will also get to see splendid scenic views before arriving in Napier.

Known as the “Nice of the Pacific”, Napier is famous for its art deco style and sunnier weather. It also has some lovely beach walks you can do, and is a great city for exploring on a bike.

5. Dunedin to Invercargill

Another fabulous route you can explore on the South Island route is the one that takes you from Dunedin to Invercargill.

A major highlight on this route is the chance to see penguins and sea lions up close at the Otago Peninsula. However, you’ll also head south along the Catlins, which is arguably one of New Zealand’s most underrated regions.

There, you can expect to see hidden waterfalls, rugged cliffs, and quiet beaches that you will have pretty much to yourself. It is also worth stopping at Nugget Point Lighthouse to take in some truly spectacular views.

Invercargill is the southernmost and westernmost city in New Zealand. Once there, you can explore its Victorian, Edwardian and Art Deco heritage, or relax at the wonderful Oreti Beach.

6. Bay of Islands Loop

If you want to do a road trip that is all about beaches, boat rides, and relaxed family time, then set off north from Auckland to the Bay of Islands.

Along the way, make sure you stop in at Whangarei, which has some exquisite waterfalls and excellent playgrounds for children to enjoy. After that, continue to Paihia, where you can enjoy dolphin-watching cruises or short hikes to historic sites like the Waitangi Treaty Grounds. The beach here is as good as anything you will find in Bali.

As the loop takes you back south to Auckland, it gives you time to explore Kerikeri’s orchards and lively markets before concluding your drive.
