Tomorrow, (Saturday, 14 December), Andy Beswick, will attempt to swim the equivalent of the English Channel, 34km (1360 laps) at the Lennox Aquatic Centre.
Andy was inspired to take on this challenge after breaking his leg in a running race in September. After 6 weeks in a moon boot, Andy decided to challenge himself in the pool to gain strength and also raise funds for Our Kids.
The funds raised from Andy’s Challenge will help Our Kids purchase a $19,200 Video Laryngoscope for Ballina District Hospital. This equipment is used when a sick child needs to be incubated.
“A C-MAC video laryngoscope is a handheld device that allows the anaesthetist to see the vocal cords inside the child’s mouth. This is very important when a child needs an operation & we need to put a breathing tube between the vocal cords & into the child’s airway,” said
Dr Melissa Goldberg, Director of Anaesthesia & Perioperative Medicine Medical Workforce, Richmond Network.
“In small children, the tongue can make it difficult to see the vocal cords. The video laryngoscope moves the tongue out of the way so we can see the vocal cords’’ Dr Goldberg explained.
