A big win for Goonellabah in LJ Hooker League action

Goonellabah Workers Sports have had a comprehensive win over Alstonville in Round 11 of the LJ Hooker League competition.

Alstonville won the toss and sent Goonellabah in to bat at Hill Park Oval, with Jack Cooper opening the innings with a flurry.

Cooper, who recently returned from the Australian Country Cricket Championships, where he was named in the Australian Merit side, hit five 6's in a quickfire 44 off just 28 balls.

Goonellabah were 2/50 when Cooper was caught, which started a mini collapse, to see the visitors 6/84, before several strong partnerships allowed GWS to post a competitive total.

Kale Hare steadied the middle order with 38, Brady Toniello finished off the innings with 49 and Ben Cooper was 34 not out, with Goonellabah all out for 230 in the 39th over.

Hare then struck early with the ball, picking up the first three wickets to have Alstonville struggling at 3/28.

Alec Watson then picked up the valuable wicket of Kyle Yager for 22, and the Goonellabah side were looking for an early finish.

Alstonville were eventually all out for 94 in the 32nd over, resulting in a dominant 136 run victory for Goonellabah.

Hare finished with 3/26, Watson impressed with 3/15 off 8 overs, and Ben Cooper took 3/19 in a strong all-round performance.

Goonellabah moved into a share of the competition lead after Lennox Head upset leaders Tweed Banora by 3 wickets.

Goonellabah will host Pottsville at Oakes Oval next Saturday.

In the other local match, Marist Brothers went down to the strong Cudgen side by 4 wickets.

Cudgen won the toss and sent Brothers into bat, with Brothers only posting 114, to be all out in the 37th over.

The Hornets passed the total, six wickets down in the 25th over.

Luke Hamshaw top-scored with 22, and Israr Ul Mabood had 21. Tom Parsons (2/34) and Tom Lindsay (2/7) were the best of the bowlers.

Brothers will play Terranora Lakes next Saturday in Round 12.
