One of the oldest events in world motor sport – the Australian Speedcar Grand Prix – will be held at Castrol Edge Lismore Speedway, on Saturday night.
This year marks the 70th running of what has been termed in speedway jargon "The Great Race", which over the years has been won by some of the biggest names in Australian and overseas Speedcar
racing since the AGP was first held in 1938 at the former Sydney Sports Ground venue.
This will be the second occasion the time honoured event has been conducted at the historic Lismore Showground Speedway after promoter David Lander hosted the 2019 AGP.
“This is one of the most famous Speedway races in the world and I am extremely happy to have the Australian Speedcar Grand Prix once again come to Lismore,” Lander said.
“When you look through the winners' list it's not only impressive, but absolutely incredible some of the names who have won this race over the years and have their name engraved on the Perpetual Shield.”
Legendary four time Indianapolis 500 winner A J Foyt raced to victory twice – at Sydney's former Liverpool Speedway in 1975 and '76 – while 20-time American Sprintcar Champion Steve Kinser drove to a sensational win also at Liverpool in 1986.
Australian speedway legends over past decades Andy McGavin, Ray Revell, Jeff Freeman, Len Brock, Johnny Stewart and Garry Rush are winners.
So many great competitors have won the AGP including modern day stars Nathan Smee, Troy Jenkins, Darren Jenkins, Michael Pickens (NZ), Adam Clarke and Reid Mackay.

Reid's grandfather Ron Mackay, a former two times Australian Speedcar Champion, won this race (at the Sydney Showground) in 1971.
While at this writing entries are yet to be finalised, the 2018 Australian Speedcar Champion Kaidon Brown from Sydney was an early nomination for the 2021 AGP.
Organisers are expecting a strong line-up of east coast Speedcar drivers to contest the event.
The man who eclipsed the long-standing record of five wins held jointly by Revell and McGavin, is Sydney's now retired Mark Brown. In 2015 at the Nowra Speedway he recorded his sixth career victory in the event to become the most prolific AGP winner.
The iconic former Sydney Showground Speedway at Moore Park hosted the race a record setting 33 times in front of massive crowds. Ten times Australian Sprintcar Champion and Australian Speedway Hall of Famer Garry Rush won on the pavement at Liverpool in 1977, but his win in 1996 at the Sydney Showground was one of the greatest moments in AGP history. It was the last time the Australian Speedcar Grand Prix was ever held at the Sydney Showground before its permanent closure for speedway to make way for Fox Studios.
Australian speedway icon the late George Tatnell also lifted the AGP trophy (1973), while triple Australian Sprintcar titleholder Max Dumesny won at the Sydney Showground in 1992.
Englishman Bill Reynolds was the 1956 winner, while other Americans who have stamped their authority on the race include the late, great Bob Tattersall, who was the winner at the Sydney Showground four times during the sixties, Cal Niday, Frank Brewer (born in NZ but later became an American citizen), Jimmy Davies, Dave Strickland, Ron Tripp, Johnny Pearson and Lealand McSpadden.
The SSA Junior Sedan Nationals for the youngsters in speedway will support the AGP. This event was moved from earlier in the season to this coming weekend and will be keenly contested. This category is the nursery for many of the future Australian speedway stars.
Racing for Wingless Sprintcars, Production Sedans and Street Stocks also will be featured.
Gates open at 4pm and racing commences at 5:15pm.
