About Alex
I am Alex Rubin, a father farmer, carer and soldier. At this election I will be your Nationals Candidate.
I am no stranger to adversity. Growing up in single-parent family, there were no silver spoons. I experienced at an early that the only way to get ahead in life is through hard work. After leaving schools, I began my working life as a concrete and factory labourer.
I was only 19, when I left home to join the Army. Serving for over 26 years, I have deployed to 19 countries around the world; the Solomon Islands and East Timor; the Middle East and Afghanistan; Peace Keeping with the United Nations in Syria, Israel and Lebanon, as well as the leading the Australian Defence Force team during the children’s cave rescue in Thailand. I was humbled to be awarded a royal honour, from the King of Thailand. More recently I have coordinated the Army’s bushfires support in 2019 and emergency response to the catastrophic floods across the Northern Rivers in 2022.
Our family has had to face the challenges of caring for our profoundly autistic son. This is a journey that continues today, but it has taught me that health and disability care is not only critical within our community but also undervalued.
In late 2022, having been intimately involved in flood response and recovery, I reached a decision point. People remain without homes, reconstruction has stalled and nobody is focused on flood protection for our community’s future. I want to bring a lifetime of experience to restart our region’s recovery and build towards a vision of a ‘Future Ready Lismore’. So, on 11 Nov 22, I resigned from the Army to run in this election. I jumped without a parachute!
This was not an easy decision for our family, but I believe this is my next mission.
I believe that we need to bring back common sense in government. I am all about practical solutions for our regional communities, who are doing it tough through no fault of their own.
Our polices are focused on regional Australians, to rebalance the growing divide between city and country. We must have:
1. Water Security – Dunoon Dam (Pumped Hydro) & Detention Basins for Flood Mitigation.
2. Roads & Bridges – Raising our roads to make them flood safe and pothole free.
3. Emergency Services – Investment in our immediate response floods and bushfires.
4. Better Health Services – More healthcare workers, better pay and facilities.
5. Future Ready Education – Investment in early childhood education, smarter classrooms and better subject options for students.
6. Economic Development – Value added processing and Agile Industries that supports local business.
7. Law and Order – Bringing back 24-hour manned Police stations across our region (Crime is not just 9 to 5).
I am a financial conservative, focused on practical solutions “a hand up - not a hand out”
I am no politician, and that’s a good thing. I bring real world experience, I haven’t been a political staffer, local councillor, or a professional activist.
After the challenges that our community has faced, we need practical solutions and common sense. Our community is calling for a plan towards a better future, we need more honest leadership because, the people of Lismore are sick of the endless bureaucracy.
My commitment to you is that I will ensure that you are involved and informed about issues in this region and that your voice is heard before we make changes to the policy direction of our State.
The qualities that I will bring to this role are:
• Honesty
• Accountability
• Transparency
• Leadership - ‘Leaders Eat Last’.
I care, I want change and believe that the people of Lismore deserve better!
